Compensation and the Common Law Colloquium

The Université de Montréal is holding its annual Common Law Colloquium on Friday, March 21, 2014.

The title is Compensation and the Common Law. The keynote speaker will be the Honourable David Stratas of the Federal Court of Appeal.

We invite submissions of interest from presenters who are working on issues which fall under the general heading of Compensation. We do not expect to produce a published collection. Rather, our goal is to provide a forum for the discussion and dissemination of cutting-edge ideas. We are, therefore, very open to presenters who are working on new ideas or concepts and who would like to present in a forum that will provide feedback and discussion.

Submissions at all levels of generality are welcome. At its most abstract, compensation may be viewed as a unifying theme in the common law, especially in relation to tort but also in relation to remedies along the private-law spectrum. In more specific terms, compensation is important in many areas of substantive law: punitive damages; economic loss; intangible injury; efficient breach; apportionment; and the availability of money damages from public authorities.

Submissions should be sent to Paul Daly (paul.daly@umontreal.ca) on or before November 30, 2013. Limited funding may be available for travel and accommodation.

Details of last year’s Colloquium, “Regulation and the Common Law” can be found here.
